Gee, but its great to be back 'home'

I've been living out of a suitcase for three and a half months, on a pretty spontaneous journey that took me from the nightlife of Bangkok and Pattaya to the monasteries and Himalayan peaks of Bhutan (via the temples and beaches of Cambodia). It wasn't just a vacation. I worked a lot (proving to myself that indeed I can work anywhere) and went to two organic conferences (at the start and end of the trip).

Right now I'm just pleased to be back in a familiar environment, back in touch with my books and my jars of spices.

A week before coming home I read these lines from Salmon Rushdie's 'Enchantress of Florence' ...

'She wasn't interested in foreign travellers....They came in search of.. what exactly? Nothing of use. If they possessed any wisdom, the inutility of their journeying would have been obvious to them. Travel was pointless. It removed you from the place in which you had a meaning and which gave you meaning in return by dedicating your life to it, and it spirited you away to fairy lands where you were, and looked, frankly absurd' A good message for preparing for 'decompression' from 'travelling' to 'everyday' life. Last night I cooked a meal for myself (spag bol)for the first time in fifteen weeks. Tonight I took the metro as oppose to a taxi or tuc-tuc. A process of reacclimatisation. It will take a few days or weeks Adieu SE Asia

.

Welcome back to Europe
