Afer three months of frantic activity I finally unloaded the last boxes into my new flat three days before christmas. Aside from occasional forays into the city I've been sleeping, unpacking and rediscovering valuable things from my past. This song, though not literally unpacked, was one of them. What a special song- there's one stanza in it - 'the madonna was yours for free' stands out as being both self depreciating and without any bitterness. For ages I have thought that this is the best (lost) love song ever written - I haven't changed my mind.
(A note for trivia collectors - she says it is not about you-know-who, but was written for her husband- I'll take that with a pinch of salt)

Hi Nick,
Happy New Year. Read about 'Diamonds and Rust'. Great song. You probably know the song is about her relationship with Bob Dylan. He actually used the three words in a version of Going Going Gone on stage in 1976:
'Now I just got to go
before it's all diamonds and rust'
From a less-blustery-than-yesterday Cardiff,
best wishes,
Joek
Well thanks to this post I have been listening to Diamonds and Rust on a loop for the past 24 hours! A beautiful song.
Happy new year, Nick and here's to the next ten years.
Hi Joek, Sara
Joek- good to hear from you again-I trust Cardiff is treating you well. I always thought the song was about Bob, but Joan seemed to want to deny it - maybe because she feels that her relationship with him is too freqeuntly used to defne her own life: which was much richer than that. Touches of 'You're too vain- you probably think this song i about you'?
Sarah - glad that D&R inspired you.
From this positive reaction I may post one song a month or so.
Slowly waking from my torpor.. Getting ready to tackle this new project called living in a big city. After Wageningen and long established friendships and routines it is a challenge- but there are some benefits to living in a larger city ;-).
Great new year to you both
