very perceptive article about Dutch ways. Highly recommended -it's part of a series of anecdotal views of the strange habits of the Dutch as seen by oustiders.

Really an interesting observation, thanks for pointing it out. Ilike the metaphor a lot, although I'm not sure how uniersal the underlying social rule is. I haven't noticed reluctance among my friends to cross group boundaries, but perhaps they are just being gracious when confronted with my lapse as a host for inviting a broad cross section? How would I know?
I've put it to some Dutch friends, I'll be interested in the answers...
