Row, row, row your boat slowly up the stream

Yesterday I ran into an acquaintance / friend - who told me how she sometimes finds it difficult to run a business and be single - having to pull your own weight all the time in making a living and building your social life (and maintaining a home) and not having a reference group (partner or colleagues) to be a mirror, anchor or inspiration. And I listened and commiserated and offered a few ideas. Then I thought goddam - I do all that too and do it in a country where I barely speak the language. Yeah I pull a big and heavy carriage too but its my choice and I can forgive myself if I sometimes write slightly whingy blogs (like Saturday's).

I can see how you might feel a bit adrift without enough external reference points. I certainly depend very much on the mirrors held up by others. However strong your self-confidence, comparisons and feedback are useful. So what advice did you give her?

Actually, what you describe is very recognizable. A lot of people feel the need for a reference group. In Arnhem a 'borrel' is regularly organized (see naamlooz.nl). Still trying to go there myself for some inspiration :-)
