Those (Brits) among you wondering which (if any) team to support in EK 2008 the 2008 European Championship might enjoy reading this piece about why we should be rooting for the Dutch.

No no no! Not the Dutch!
How about supporting the team that gives the most aid to poor countries? Perhaps cheering on the country that spends the most on healthcare? Or booing the country that spends the most on weapons?
Check out www.whoshouldIcheerfor.com for a match-by-match guide to who to support.
Why not the Dutch? (Apart from the fact I have an orange scarf?). They probably come in pretty high on the overseas aid contributions, and I'm not sure whether spending more on health (e.g treating sickness) is a good indicator for developed countries - (though it certainly is for less developed ones).
Eco-wise': how about using highest percentage of journeys made by bike/foot and public transport or GDP per capita divided by CO2 footprint? The NL would do well on the first - but I have no idea about the second I have never seen any calculations for this. :-)
I'm an avid reader of those kind of stats - especially when attractively packaged in neat little graphics. Who would have thought that the Czech Republic is the most economically equitable nation at the EK? Some of these things are very problematic to assess though - Western Europe's carbon emissions are going down - but largely because we are exporting most of our manufacturing to low wage economies.
Good of WDM to tie into the tournament to highlight some social issues. But I think that I will be shouting for the team that plays the most attrctive football.
'Outstanding article: thanks for posting the link to it! I came back from a trip and was trying to figure out what all of the orange was about...'had to get an explanation at work that it was all about football and not leftovers from Queen's Day.

Good point Nick. CO2 emissions are one of the factors in the whoshouldicheerfor rankings - see http://www.wdm.org.uk/whoshouldicheerfor/issues.htm
