Baby's on the road again

For the first three months of this year I hardly set foot outside of - if not the the city walls - then at least the municipal boundaries - of Wageningen. Suddenly all that changed. Last week, in the space of four days, I went to Rotterdam, Delft, Gouda and Nijmegen. And in the next ten days it looks like I am heading for Utrecht, Tiel, Tilburg and Amsterdam. Small travels perhaps compared to some of the people whose blogs I have bookmarked here. But a welcome change to see some new sights. I was starting to feel a little claustrophic.

Its a sure sign of spring when the open road beckons and you start packing picnics. You will say something if you find something good? Someone said the tulip fields are late this year; is it worth trying this weekend?

More generally, how do you approach your outings? I tend to park quickly and start walking, Sunday morning when there aren't too many people around and the light is good. 'trying to get a stretch for the legs and the mind, I try to stay away from much purpose or agenda.

Evrything is late this year. I don't know about the tulip fields (you mean the Keukenhof and surrounding areas?). One trip I am planning soon is to go South across the river to the Betuwe to walk among the fruit trees while they are in blossom. One highly rated trip is along the Appeldyke - a 4 KM (or so) dyke planted on both sides with apple trees and surrounded by orcahrds. Its between the towns of Beesd and Tricht (20k or so west of Tiel). Should becoming into bloom soon - though I hear it is busy on springtime Sundays.

As for planning trips - I currently have a big project which is walking across the Netherlands from Hoek van Holland to Maastricht - via Nijmegen - following three long distance footpaths (click on the walking the Netherlands link for past experiences and progress to date - about 20% of the total walk has been done in 18 months). Sometimes the start and end points are accesible by NS - in which case I take the train - sometimes neither is -and involves having two cars and parking one off at each end. I am planning to be on the Betuwe for the next leg (circa 20km) in the next two weeks (-a section doable by train) - you are welcome to join me if you like and our timetables match up.

Oooh, I have just noticed you have changed your name to Ripple. How intriguing? Will we find out why?

I was experimenting with creating an alter ego but ended up changing my entire persona. Fortunately it proved to be reversible.
