On a golden autumn day

It's a sunny autumn weekend. I was planning to go to Rotterdam and do another leg of the big walk across the NL. But I got to Utrecht and there had been a (non-fatal) train accident at Gouda which meant that travelling to Rotterdam would involve travelling down to Breda and back up again - in short a tour around half of the Netherlands - not attractive. So I call a friend in Utrecht, who is is free and in the city centre and we have a coffee, catch up on news and he gives me a tour of the back streets and medieval gardens of Utrecht. And I think what a beautiful city. I'm a little self-conscious about beng in one of Holland's uber-trendy spots dressed in hiking gear - walking boots, three quarter length bright red trousers, rugby shirt and a fleece - bit in the few hours I'm there three attractive women come up to me and ask me for something (a light, directions and to take a photo of them) and I have this small inkling that I am living in the wrong city. At the risk of sounding like a teenager, life in my small town has been quite boring recently and there's not much to do at the weekends. Funny how a few ripples on the surface of the pond can make one restless for different things.
