I popped into my local phone store this evening to put 10 Euro onto my Pay As You Go account. Twenty minutes later I was still there: discussing the meaning of life, or more precisely whether there is a god: creationism vs. random evolution. It all started when my supplier asked if I was a ‘believer’. I said yes, but a Buddhist. In short ‘what goes around comes around’. I believe in karmic justice - but not in a great magistrate in the sky judging our acts (my French wasn’t that precise).
There followed a wonderful soliloquy about the beauty of the planet and the things on it that sustain us and the precision of the engineering of the human body. And the question: “was this all random?” I had no real answer for that. I don’t believe in creationism – but I also don’t find random evolution provides a satisfactory answer either.
Humanist/non-deist answers/ideas on a postcard please……
