I notice that there are a lot of special offers on crates of beer in Dutch supermarkets this week. I suspect that they and the breweries went into over purchase / production mode last week in their enthusiasm to meet demand for another (rare) ocurrence of Dutch binge drinking. I also noticed this week that the students are looking remarkably shaky on their bikes in the morning. But this is the end of the academic year so perhaps that's not so unusual.
I recently discovered that a new Lidl store has opened close to Wageningen. Normally I avoid discounters, but Lidl also do quality, especially their beer and bread. They are a German chain and these are two of the things Germans do best. I hesitate about buying their meat because I suspect it is hugely factory farmed. One of the more tempting product lines that they offer is musky squid. How can any red-blooded fella turn his nose up at that? It was good with sweetcorn, peppers and pasta. But - last night I didn't wash the dishes before I went to bed and this morning I had a 9.00 appointment and I came home this evening to find my kitchen smelling like a whorehouse after a "buy one, get one free" offer.
Other good things at Lidl? Well they had goose breast- which is really rare to see in the NL - and perhaps I should have laid in one or two for my next seduction dinner (whenever that may occur) although I didn't because the possibilities at the moment seem quite limited. And their Valdepenas (at about 3 Euro a bottle) is very drinkable.
My god, I have just done a blog about shopping. Next week I'll be comparing Gucci with Versace (not). BTW. If you want to offend a Dutchman this week offer to buy him a (triple)vodka.

Hi nick,
Don't feel offended, but England
DIDN'T made it at all to the European Championships at all!!!!
Considering that Russia's head coach is Guus Hidding, I think it wasn't that of a surprise this would happen. So thanks for the tripple Vodka. Nastrasovia (Hips).
About Lidl,Most products are good. You should try the Australian Chardonnay (wine of Australia brand). It's very good I think. About the meat, you could be right about that it's produced bio-industrial. I usaly buy my meat at Albert Heijn, since they sell biological produced meat.
Greats,
André
A. I was teasing of course. English football fans had their bout of angst last March or so - with huge discussions about whether the national team was being ruined by too much money in the Premier League. (Ironicaly much of it Russian). Spain has a long history of this, having the best club track record in Europe - built on the back of Latin American and Hungarian talent and a national team that has consistently done de nada. Maybe that will change tonight. Will we be toasting with vodka or sangria?
But what I want to know is whether Huddink (Heddink?) is a national treasure or public enemy #1? A great coach who represnts Dutch entrepreneurial virtues or a turncoat who put the national team out ?
About meat: I have a coop nearby which does a good range of organic products - including meat. Sometimes I go to the Keuze Slagerij, which although not organic is( I trust - though perhaps mistakenly) at least free range and animal welfare friendly.
