Walking the Netherlands - Day 8

Day 2 on the Lingepad: Geldermaslen to Tiel - 22KM

This area - the Betuwe - which lies between the Waal and Rhine rivers is famous for its fruit trees - so what better time to visit than in spring when the blossom is out?

A few shots from Buren, a historic walled town half way along the route. The flags are out in preparation for Queen's Day - the biggest national holiday here.

A shot of the chateau at Soeren near the end of the walk.

'The Betuwe line' - a controversial multi million euro rail project that cuts across the Betuwe and was intended to link Rotterdam with North Rhine Westphalia. Although officially opened it has not much used as the German side of the line has not yet be built/upgraded. The power lines stand like a gigantic whale skeleton along the side of the A15 - a monument to international non-cooperation? This line is not on the map in my walking guide, nor the road realignments that accompanied it - so I had to wing the last 2km into Tiel using instinct rather than the guidebook
