Day trip to Kleve

Day trip over the border to Kleve. The Swantower Castle, which overlooks the town, is an ancient centre of learning and culture, whose distinguished visitors include Voltaire and John Locke. The castle was heavily damaged in 1944 but has now been restored and its museum contains the skull and a leg of a mammoth. The castle was also the birth place of Anne of Kleve who became Henry VIII's fourth wife, though the marriage was never consummated. She didn't lose her head over him, but the Earl of Essex who acted as the marriage broker later did.
